I remember reading somewhere that the reason you put the extra shims on 
the outside is to stop them getting lost. Therefore, when I forgot to 
put them on when I installed my generator I didn't worry about it.

Anyway, I went out and put them on now. For some reason I had 10 shims 
all in all. If I put them all on, the nut wouldn't screw on the whole 
way, so I used six, as Russ said.
