What I smoked was the regulator. A replacement fixed the gen light problem. Thanks Jack. I decide to do some errands and the scary sound returned. It had been around a while so I ignored it and kept driving. Not the wisest decision I ever made. I threw my generator belt. It turns out that the scary sound was coming from the generator, but not the bearings. Somehow the shaft that holds the pully segments got worn through so that there was a groove allowing the outer segment of the pully to spin freely. I was going to take a picture but my cameras battery is flat and it takes more time to recharge than I think the picture is worth. Fortunately my insurance company gave me free roadside assistance for being a long term customer. I got a tow home and replaced the generator with a spare that came with the car. Now it is eerily quiet. At an intersection I though the engine died and tried to restart it. DUH.
