Should I try to drain some off, or just wait > > for it to leak back to the right level? > Having followed a Type 2 pickup with a new auto-box that had been overfilled, I can assure you that on a wet day it sprays out behind and coats any car following with a thin layer of the stuff. It can then do at least a 1000 mile round trip to Wolfsburg without any problem (and so can my Type 3 smothered with the stuff!). ;-( Actually, it's a sort of oil, so while helping reduce rusting, it accelerates rubber seal deterioration. I believe the mechanic put in the full amount of ATF even though the box came partly filled, and didn't check the level. Dave.
