Yes, this sounds scary.

I think that first you have to try to figure out what the cause of the problem 
is. MOST modern tires are bidirectional, so swapping sides is not normally a 
problem. Nevertheless, I don't think anyone recommends that these days.

If the new wheels have different offset, then this can aggrevate alignment 
problems, so an alignment is a good place to start, especially if you're not so 
sure about your current alignment.

Check your brake rotors for temperature. If one is dragging this could cause 
this if the new wheels have less offset. They should be the same temp after a 
drive. Be careful, you can burn yourself badly if they are hot.
