It sounds like you're operating the 3-4 side of the shifter (having to force
the socket to the left to align it (get the ball end in)). Is it possible that
the coupler has come loose from the hockey stick (shift rod sticking out of
the trans)? If that set screw has come loose, then you might have trouble
getting a gear. Or possibly that the shift rod end of the coupler isn't in the same
location as it was when you started? I'm only asking because with a "stock"
shifter the plate under it can be installed 4 ways with only 1 correct. The
correct locationm has already been described. I can't help you on the push button
version your car already had. Why did you remove it?
What exactly have you done to get this problem to crop up? I'm only asking
because it sounds like something simple (like a spacer plate installed
incorrectly) has snowballed into a full blown problem that keeps snowballing into a
bigger problem. Some times it's the little things that catch you up (BTDT).
