With the original distributor in there, run the rpms up while you watch with a timing light, then install the A-R distributor and adjust it to give the same high rpm advance. Make both measurements with the vac hoses off to avoid extra confusion. Once you have the A-R distributor set to give the right advance at high rpm, you can let the engine slow down and see where it wants to be at idle.
