You might want to consider swapping the original vac can onto the A-R 
distributor. That's really the only way to be sure that you're doing the 
correct thing.

With the original distributor in there, run the rpms up while you watch with a 
timing light, then install the A-R distributor and adjust it to give the same 
high rpm advance. Make both measurements with the vac hoses off to avoid extra 
confusion.

Once you have the A-R distributor set to give the right advance at high rpm, 
you can let the engine slow down and see where it wants to be at idle. Use this 
setting in the future.
