[T3] Typ3 Automatic vs later Bus automatic

After my Military service I have limited use of my right arm, I would like 
to keep Dubbin' with ano automatic (not auto-stick) does any one know the 
ins and outs and which ones I should avoid? I ahve experience with the early 
Golf-1(Rabbit) type which seems to ahve interchangeable parts with the later 
bus type only the diffs are different, I guess this saved on tooling costs. 
I almost bought a 68/69 fast automatick that was beutiful but my wife HATEs 
red. What are the Experienced/Educated inputs to pass along.
I will be on my way back to the USA shortly,
minus my Euro only: 1996 Golf Variant (wagon) SYNCRO,
around May this year.
