Never use 4th gear on city streets in the winter. I have driven VW's in
all sorts of weather since 1964, and don't have any signs of frost bite.
Last few years, though, I do park them in the winter in favor of a 4wd
pickup, due to the 3-5 miles of unplowed roads I have to drive every day
when it snows.
