You sound like your only source of information right now is a Haynes manual. if this is the case, then get yourself a Bentley manual before you start any serious repairs. Based on your description I get the impression that you intend on using this vehicle as primary transportation in Montana in the winter. if that's the case, then get heat exchangers for your engine ASAP. Thirdly, get an appropriate muffler for your engine. These steps should make you safe and comfortable enough with the car to be able to take on the other items as they present themselves.
