Sorry but I just can't help but nitpick a few minor points. First the 009 
wasn't introduced until the 70's and it's use in racing was not short lived. 
In 2003 at the sacramento bug o' rama most of the race cars had 009 
distributors, many running sub 11 second quarter miles. I don't know where 
the idea that mechanical advance distributors were for stationary engines 
came from but some early porsches and vw buses came stock with them. The 009 
was the replacement superceding the 010 an early bus distributor. The real 
issue is what works better on the street. Vacuum and mechanical advance 
combined is the answer. A 009 basically works similar to a stock distributor 
without the vacuum lines hooked up. Vacuum advance gives the advantage of 
driveability and fuel economy. The other point is the stock coil can fail 
but it very rarely does.
