I suspect that you're thinking about the middle part which runs in a groove in the inside face of the rocker. It sounds like it may have moved more than once. My 68 and 69 are completely different from my 71-3. The 68-9 runs between the inner and outer fender. You can see it from the outside of the car if you take the fender off.
