I think that on the first clutch cable I ever tried to replace, I tried to do 
it thru that access hatch and was completely stymied. I ended up taking the 
pedal cluster out and that's the way I've done it ever since.

That first car was a 68, so maybe the access hatch was useful on earlier cars, 
but I'm pretty sure it isn't, at least for the clutch cable, from 68-on.
