Re: [T3] Porsche tranny Swap

<x-flowed>Correct, I'm running a T1 tranny using the Gene Berg 5-speed kit (and it ain't a do-it-yerself type!). The purpose, from what I understand, is to have less of a gear spread so you can stay in your power band when running a higher performance engine because they *generally* have a more narrow torque band. Trouble is, you tend to shift more often -- some do consider that a negative. It also can let you have a close ratio tranny for the drag strip but a taller 5th gear so you can actually drive your car on the freeway without winding out the motor ;-)

I do like having a 5-speed but the GB unit requires you to use their shifter. Their shifter does have a reverse lock out button you have to push in (with your thumb) to get into reverse -- this is a good thing -- HOWEVER, you also have to push in that damn button when you want to shift into 5th gear -- this is a BAD thing!

If someone can drop in a 5-speed from another vehicle and do it simply -- with good documentation and pictures as well, I think it'd be a better solution. I do like my GB-5 but it could be improved and GB was NO HELP during and after my installation. They seemed more concerned about selling it to me than supporting me afterwards. Oh well.

What about in a '73 square?

Anything is possible. But what is the point? Would it be worth the effort to give you bragging rights to say: "I have a Porsche tranny in my VW" It won't give you any more power or speed. Our trannies have approx. the same ratios, and with a taller gear, you run out of torque from the engine on the hills. I think Toby has a modified 5 speed tranny in his Squareback. But it is built from a VW tranny.
