Hey folks, Long time - been very busy and what with winter, not doing much t-3 stuff. But my generator problem has re-emerged. And I'm wondering if it could have anything to do with water. After the snow and a thaw, I went and thoroughly hosed down and washed the car. Three days later, after a hard rain, the generator light starts throbbing, vacillating with the idle of the engine. It has steadily been getting worse. This is a 72 FI squareback. The generator is a rebuilt bosch. Brushes are fine. Commutator shows some slight wear lines that may indicate a short. But not as severe as other times. When I disconnect DF and D+ I get a reading of 1V when I connect VOM red lead to D+ and black lead to gnd. Then, with VOM still connected, when I ground df a get a voltage DROP to almost 0. I checked this three times to be sure and this is the case. The disconnected D+, with respect to ground, reads 30 ohms The disconnected DF, with respect to ground, reads infinity. Measuring across DF to D+ posts on the generator, I show 3 ohms. There is nothing in the DF wiring the is exposed to indicate a short. The insulation is fine, in fact, its just about the best condition of all my wiring back there. Visual inspection of the inside of the generator (not disassembled) shows no signs of anything wrong. The wwire that broke on my last generator is still intact. The little screw on the back side of the generator is there and secure. I'm getting sick of this problem - it's proving very costly and I can't keep a big enough stockpile of generators to just wait for the problem to emerge again, especially since it seems so erratic. Any advice? -- Mike Wodkowski 72 FI SQBK Brooklyn wodkowski@mac.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
