Panel vans were pretty much Squarebacks - they sold in markets where there wasn't a lot of choice of van, and the good reputation and servicing facilites of VW attracted sales. I don't think the 500 figure is correct for world-wide sales - maybe only 500 sold in Australia, but I doubt that too. I have a (?64) sales brochure with the 1500S etc and the panel van pictured, in English. Per will no doubt comment when he can - his father bought one in Norway back in the '60s. Simon Glen owned one back in Nigeria many years ago, and he converted it to a Squareback and sold it to the local VW dealer for a good price (quite a bit more than a panel van was worth). Dave.
