What could those flat strips be from? I've had one of them apart, and the only thing I can think of for those reddish strips would be lining material from the clutch packs. Most everything else I saw in there was made of various metals .. though I didn't get into the valve body. Whether or not those are from the clutch packs, finding that stuff in the pan es no bueno. Knowing how you baby that car, like to drive that car, and don't half-ass things like I sometimes do (speaking as Mr. Three Wheel Brakes to Idaho!), I'd seriously suggest getting it rebuilt. There actually *are* people and shops that know how to work on them. I know of two shops here in Portland (though only experience with one) that can do them, and there's bound to be a few places in the SF Bay Area as well -- Long Enterprises might be able to work on it (or aim you to someone who can), but they tend to be .. pricey. Also, rebuild kits are actually still out there. I just did a quick search and found listings and prices at European Transmissions (http://www.europeantransmissions.com/rebuiltkits/VW.reb.kits.htm) and their price on the master kit (gaskets, seals, friction clutches & steel clutch plates) is a surprisingly reasonable $40. God help you if you need "hard parts" like bands & drums, though. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
