I also agree the early ones look better, but you CAN have your cake and eat
it too! Here's my recently acquired '71 Squareback:

notice that it doesn't look like a '71. It has early bullet turn signals
early bumpers on the front.

Here's a straight on front shot:
http://neil.us/type3/71square/02.jpg
notice the lack of a hood ornament and the accompanying hump where it
usually sits. It's been shaved off along with all the chrome trim and the
holes filled in.

Here's the back:

Once again, an early bumper and also early rear fenders.

I'm still working through the bugs in this car. It needs quite a bit of
engine tin, which I have, but I don't have the time to put it on. It's
parked for the winter now since they are starting to use some salt on the
roads in the Boise area. I still don't know what size the engine is. I
managed to find one PO, but he doesn't know what was in it. He had purchased
it for his grand daughter to drive, and then his son didn't want her to
drive it, so he sold it at an auction. I bought it from the dealer who got
it at the auction. The dealer of course did not know what was in it either.
Does anyone here know this car??? It was an orignal California car, but I
bought it in St. Louis and brought it home to Idaho.

I do have some future mods planned for this car. They are fairly simple and
will give the car even more early cues. The first is that I plan to install
an early gas tank and weld the gas door closed. The second thing I plan on
doing is to install an early rear hatch to have the smaller license light
and different style license plate hole. The other thing I think I'll do is
to install original early Type 3 side markers on it. All these items will be
done when it gets a repaint in 3-4 years (after the '65 notch is done).

More pictures are at http://neil.us/type3/71square/ where you can browse the
directory.
