well, took the 71 squareback for a long drive over the weekend as it will now be my commuter until the notchback is up and running again. got the heater boxes all warm and then SMOKE!!! everywhere on the right side. pulled the car over, checked for burnt wires... nothing. then it hits me: i have the right side heater system incomplete and that smoke smells like burning fur!!! can you say, "baked mouse"? other than smoking mouse fir, the car is running fine; but rich. keith park and i have had some discussion about the FI in the car and the fact that it doesn't fast idle when cold, and it is running on the rich side... so it is time to trouble shoot. if that doesn't work, i will just 'rip out' the FI and add carbs (made ya look keith/jim!!!). i am actually trying to leave the FI in this car. so FYI, if you car has sat for a while now, and you have an unsealed exhaust/heater system, beware of the possible smoke/smell from the heater. oops!
