The first part sounds fine, but the second part, unless I didn't understand, 
was likely to tear the rubber piston boots in the caliper. Once they have been 
penetrated AT ALL, you are committed to a caliper rebuild.

I sometimes just use a flat blade screwdriver to carefully scrape the rust off 
JUST the flat top and bottom of the inside of the caliper. If you're careful, 
you won't slip and damage the boots.
