The first part sounds fine, but the second part, unless I didn't understand, was likely to tear the rubber piston boots in the caliper. Once they have been penetrated AT ALL, you are committed to a caliper rebuild. I sometimes just use a flat blade screwdriver to carefully scrape the rust off JUST the flat top and bottom of the inside of the caliper.
