[T3] Mechanics, FI, built motors.

I took my new '67 square to a recommended mechanic, recently, because
it's making a high pitched grinding [ ish ] noise when I release the
clutch, going into first and reverse. [ sounds like synchro's to me,
but I've been told it would pop out of gear if it was, and it does not.
] I was looking for someone to drop the motor, and check the new
pressure plate and throwout bearing.
This car has been built, my first built car ever. it's a 2275cc. When
I told the guy this he said. "oh, no. I don't mess with that. you need
to take it somewhere else." And I thought, ok, he's not a hotrodder,
he's a cool old school make it run well stock guy. So I asked him if he
would be interested in working my '71 FI square, and he says [ about
FI ] "Look, I stay away from the problem stuff now."
I thought that was sort of funny.
Anyhow, it leaves me wondering what I've gotten myself into, getting
back into type 3's without the time or space to do all the work myself.
[ actually. I'm not sure how good I was back when I did do all the work
myself. ]
Still, I love my two "problem stuffs".
And While I've mentioned FI, this is the only Fuel Injected VW, [
besides the jetta. ] that i've had. Most of my life I always ran into
folks who call FI, "fuel infected". But here there seems to be a fair
amount of support for FI.
It seems to accelerate and run very smoothly. Is that the effect of my
fuel injection? or is it just that this engine is tuned better than
others I've had. [ honestly tuning, timing, carbs, is the part I was
the worst at. ]
And last for the FI proponants, [ who happen to be dark siders? is
that zero? ]
Do people use FI on built motors ever? or can you not adjust to the
computers to work with built motors?
Last. Is there a FI faq? my '71 FI, is sputtering now and then, and I
want to try and figure out what it is.
or where should I start learning how to troubleshoot it?
