[T3] Carburetor problem
<x-flowed>The past couple days my '66 Type 3 Ghia has been hesitating under a medium
load. I thought maybe I had an ignition problem or possibly dirt in the
carbs as it felt like a cylinder wasn't firing sometimes. Weird thing was,
it mainly seemed to occur only when the car was cold.
I ran through all the normal stuff like dwell, timing, checked the spark
plug wires, fuel filter, etc.. I decided to replace the cap & rotor since I
had never done that, they looked a bit burnt, and the cap was still one of
the old brown bakelite ones which they haven't made for years. It started
and idled a lot smoother after the installation but still had a hesitation
problem in the mornings.
Last night I pulled off the tops of the stock dual carbs. to see if there
was any crap in the bowl. Surprise, the left-hand side "power fuel" pipe
had fallen down into the fuel bowl under the float. This is the little pipe
that sticks down from the top 1/2 of the carburetor to provide extra fuel
under load.
Stuck it back in, problem solved.
Questions for the future:
1. What should the resistance be for a "good" rotor? 1K ohms? Mine was
reading 3K. I cleaned the end with some sandpaper and it went down to
around 1K but I decided to replace it and keep the original one as an
emergency spare.
2. What should the resistance be for "good" spark plug wires (the ends
really)? 1K ohms as well? Mine read as 1k but one reads a bit low, around
940 ohms. The engine was hot so maybe that affected it.
