RussW=> are you sure you adjusted the valves => on #3 while you were on TDC #3? This was my thought too -- a valve adjustment error. It's kind of a stretch, but it's certainly possible. Or a busted valve spring, maybe. I think it'd be a good idea to go back into the left valve cover and have a good look around. Maybe you left a tool in there ...
