I went down to Sacramento last week to pick up a '65 tank for my '67 at a good price. I checked out the remainder of the square, and while it's in good shape superficially, it is rusted out at the heater channels significantly. If anyone needs any body metal from anywhere above that, it should be in good shape. I rigged up a suction line to my tank to try and drain as much as possible. I ended up with about a gallon of dark stuff coming out. I took off the fuel level sender to access the tank for siphoning. I stuck a stick in there to see what it felt like, ick. There was about an inch of crunchies on the bottom of the tank. See what I get for leaving a lot of gas in a tank for about 10 years! I built a cheezy cover for the fuel sender, and clamped off the fuel line, cut the line, and took it outside. It didn't slosh around very much, it was really crunchy! Probably rust flakes from the ceiling of the tank. Any harm in sloshing the crunchies around for awhile to scour the tank before I drain it from the filler neck? I can't see any harm and it may even take additional flakes off. Externally, the original tank is clean and not rusty at all. The replacement is rusty on the outside, and has a surface coat on the inside. I removed the fuel level sender to look inside. I've never worked with a gas tank before, so I can't say which is better or worse. I assume that the '65 and '67 are 6v and 12v respectively and the fuel gage sender shouldn't be used on the inappropriate voltage car. Any suggestions on sealing the fuel sender when re-installing it? With the tank out of the way, re-fitting the brake components should be much easier! Yah! Found more black widow webs and egg sacks as well with a huge amount of mud-wasp nests wrapping around the steering shaft. I'll have to take some shots (non-digital) and will eventually post them.
