Whenever I rebuild an engine I generally saw a screwdriver slot in the end of 
this rod, parallel to the flaps. This way you have a clear indicator of the 
flap position at any time, and you can also stick a screwdriver in it and twist 
a bit to make sure that the linkage is still free.
