It's important to fix this because dirt and water will continue to be thrown in there by the wheel, especially when the pavement is wet. If that was stamped into the metal of the transmission body, then that is probably just the MT serial number. I don't know what it means. VW didn't really keep track of them as far as I can tell. They're not mentioned in the microfilm.
