There's probably nothing wrong with the generator or the solenoid - it's more likely the brushes are not making good contact with the commutator, and/or a sticking gear on starter motor shaft. If you can start it again after a tap on the starter motor casing with a hammer (tried that?), it's even less likely to be an electrical problem. ;-) Other possibilities include poor connections anywhere from the starter switch to the solenoid, a bad bush in the bell-housing, and a failing ignition/starter switch (less likely as yours usually works OK). An extra relay is easy to fit beside the battery 30Amp rating seems fine. The starter switch to solenoid wire passes there anyway, and there's a connector near the battery (72-on) or by the tunnel beside the right-hand seat (true for RHD - is it still that side on LHD cars?). Often a new battery or new starter motor cures the problem, but neither is usually needed! Just give it a good electrical clean-up. I would guess at least 80% of VW owners have experienced this at some time, including those living in cool Britannia! It is an effect that occurs more often after a fast run, particularly when attempting a restart after filling up. There's help on solving this problem on http://www.hallvw.clara.co.uk/starter.htm .
