I've noticed this on any rubber type of seal/boot/gasket...not sure why?

I was cleaning up the shop a little yesterday, and picked up the new air
intake boot that I bought last fall. I noticed that it already has
several cracks in it, and it has never been on the car. :=(
Has anyone else noticed this, or is this just the one that I bought?
