I'm not at all familiar with the early years, but didn't they all get the tranny to pan strap? That should be all you need. That strap handles all the starter current, and after that everything else is gravy. Consider the fact that the tranny strap also attaches to a point on the pan that is close to the battery ground strap and you have a nearly ideal situation. I don't think you need anything else. I suspect the D- wire is just to keep the VR from losing its ground when the pan rusts there. As long as the starter still runs, there's no danger of the engine losing its ground. The strap you're talking about may have been part of an electrical noise (spark) suppression scheme, but I would not expect it to be particularly effective. Generally, you create more problems than you solve when you start adding extra grounds in an attempt to reduce radiated electrical noise. Just make sure you have the late style of SP connectors with the built-in resistors in good condition. -- Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
