If the spiral-wound semi-flexible heater pipes are unwound, there's a fibrous thread-like packing material between the coils which I'm sure isn't glass-fibre. I agree it wouldn't need to be asbestos for heat resistance, but maybe they would choose something non-flammable. The compressed jackets around the heater thermostat housing and the lower heat exchangers don't seem to be fibre-glass either, but I've always assumed they are asbestos, like the old exhaust repair cloths and tapes, fire blankets and laboratory heat-proof mats used to be even 25 years ago, let alone the 30 or 40 that our cars are. Anyway, I wouldn't see them as potentially harmful even if asbestos - you don't normally abrade them on a regular basis, and the coiled flexible pipes cover up the fibre packing unless they start coming undone. Inhaling clutch and brake lining dust however is potentially harmful, as sets more than about 10 years old generally contain asbestos. Dave.
