> I recently read somewhere that someone tested all the original VW heater > pipe coverings they could find and none of them had asbestos in them. > The outer covers are woven glassfibre cloth, but the spiral of sheet metal that is wound round to form the tube does have a fibrous material very like asbestos to seal the coils. The moulded lagging around the lower heat exchangers and the thermostat box on the rear bulkhead are also made from some sort of mineral fibre. Are you talking about these parts or the jackets on the flexible pipes? It would be reassuring to know these fibres aren't asbestos at all, but it was still a commonly used material in the '70s, though mainly the white variety which is not considered as dangerous as blue or brown forms of the mineral. Our local collection place doesn't even insist that the old asbestos cement panels are wrapped for disposal. Dave.
