Most of these need work by now, but the troubles you describe (injectors and
stuff) don't sound like they point to a rebuild. They just point to a lack of
understanding, on your part and/or your mechanic.

If you have basic skills, a place to work, a good machine shop to do the work
you can't do, the willingness to ask questions when you are confused, and the
persistence to see this thru (it will take several months) then you will always
get a better end result if you do it yourself. If you try to buy a rebuilt
engine you have a much lower chance of satisfaction, because, in the first
place, you won't get an engine that's exactly right for your year, and secondly
you'll get someone elses rush job.

There were some type 3s made in Austrailia in 1974, but German production ended
with 73. If this Type 3 was sold in the US it can't be a 74.

OTOH, you didn't say that this was a type 3. You just said you had a fastback.
There were type 4s made up thru 74. Maybe that's what you have. Tell us the VIN
(chassis number) and we can tell you much more about it.
