All I have right now is an "educated guess".  I *strongly* suspect that
it was some residual oil on the exhaust manifold from the (recently fixed) 
leaking V/C gasket, but until I get into it later on I'm not sure.  The 
fire melted some wires, a solenoid, some vacuum lines, the rubber portion 
of the braided CIS high-pressure hoses, and the timing belt .. ah well, 
the timing belt was due for replacement anyway. =)

It's repairable -- I just got back from the junkyard, scavenging sections
of wiring harness and the CIS hoses.. whee.
