Hi Rob,

First, Yes, the engine number on Type 3's are on top of the case near the seam.
Second, No, the engine number looks close to the VIN, but it does not 
directly correlate.

an on the VIN:
ONLY cars AFTER Aug. 1964 have the nifty numbering system that tells 
you info about the car.
Pre Aug. 1964 cars will have to use this table:

On the front tag...  typ31/255
If it it written just as illustrated, it is a Type 3 sedan, but I can 
only guess as to what the 255 means.
