One side of the relay coil gets 12V full time from the fuse box, the other side 
gets a ground from the FI brain as long as the engine is turning over. If the 
engine stops the ground disappears and the relay opens in about 1 second.

A FEW times? It shouldn't take any effort at all.

Does the pump run for about 1 second when you turn the key ON.

It's really not all that difficult. You just have to get the idea of what it 
does and how. Yes, as with all things, there's a learning curve.
