The holes in the lid will pretty much prevent significant improvement in the
sound situation. Besides, it's real bad for your interior environment. I'd
recommend yout get a good lid, fix the air-cleaner situation (stock is
best), then deal with the insulation.

I don't have a Square, so my results won't be the same as yours, but when I
redid my lid I used some of the interior cotton-rag insulation you can buy
in rolld cheap from JC Whitney. It has foil on one side, and will glue and
button up to the lid much like the stock insulation. I trimmed it for some
extra foil around the edges and tucked that between the lid and the rag. The
only obvious deviation from stock is that it doesn't have the diamond
pattern.

I used the same stuff on top of the lid, trimmed speaker-cover material over
that, then the carpet for the compartment. It's the layers on top that
really make the difference in terms of sound transmission.
