That's why I sent him here; http://www.vwtype3.org/tech/ as your rust FAQ is at the top of the list. There is also alot of good info here that is still accessible that has been compiled by the list members. He did bring up a good point, that there doesn't seem to be a "buyers guide" for type3s. I mean most of us already know to try and find as rust free an example as possible, but those are getting harder and harder to find these days. That leaves us with either trying to fix the "semi rusty" cars, or lightly rusted cars, or at least knowing where to look for rust, so we can either pass or accept the car as is. This can help in determining a price given to a potential seller too. It also helps knowing where they like to rust, so you know where to look when finding replacement parts. I've been in this situation before several times, looking at front fenders trying to find good ones that aren't rusty in either the head light bucket or the rear of the fender. This is starting to sound like a good winter (inside) project for someone to do. I know different cars, from different areas rust out in different places too. I have several that were rusted in different places from each other (except the pan under the battery (std equipment rust?)), and these cars came from different parts of the US. My wife's 70 Fastback (Texas car), was rusty above the charcoal canister and into the support rib on the left side, along with the rear of both front fenders and behind the door opening under the rear fenders, both rear floor sections, and a couple of smaller spots in the rear wheel wells. On my Notch (a Euro car), rust was everywhere, the roof, the "C" posts (inner and outer), the front fenders (both head light buckets and the rear of them), the left outer rocker, the front fresh air vents, the bottom of both rear fenders, both floors, the rear of both rear wheel well flaps (the piece that wraps from the wheel well to the end of the rear fender), and the bottom of both front and rear trunk lids. My 69 Square (Cali car) was rusted thru behind the gas filler pipe leading into the car, the section under the battery, the drain tube mounts?, and the rear deck. Its the most rust free car I own? My 71 Square (Fla/La car) my Roadster 2 project, was rusted out in the rear floor deck, and along the bottom of the front nose along with the bumper supports, the roof , both "C" and "D" posts along with the base of the rear windows and both floors. This is what I mean by different cars rusting in different places.
