> If I remember correctly VW employees actually had > their summer vacation in July so that it was easy to retool during that > quiet period. > I think different parts of Germany have their summer holiday at different times from one year to the next; we've been to Wolfsburg in the middle of August and found the factory closed - had to go to Stuttgart for Porsche and Mercededes museums then return to Wolfsburg. Some years the Hanover schools close for the summer around the end of June and are back in session by the middle of August. It's a very fair system, a bit confusing, but very organised so people can spread the holiday period and be more likely to get their towels on the sunbeds first. ;-) If we were able to do a survey of surviving week numbers, I wonder which weeks would come out least - there must be some where production is zero. There may be a bit of a grey area around the July/August weeks; I saw a Type 3 at the Amsterdam meeting in 97? that the owner knew was produced in early August with 03 as its week code; the chassis number supported an August production, so I was left wondering if it was a replacement body from a January car or a special code for pre-August production of the new model.
