A couple of things. A grade 10 bolt may be what you really want here. Grade 8 is the lowest graded type. Our cars have shocks but no struts. [Strut is short for McPherson Strut, which is the type of suspension found on Super Beetle fronts. It involves a special shock which is stiff sideways so it can be used as a suspension member.] My guess on your noise is that one of the rubber bushings on the end of the shock is loose. You should take the shock out and check both ends. At the same time you should compress and extend the shock to verify that it actually has damping action in both directions. Hold the shock upright while you do this. Finally, I've heard of shocks making noise internally. I don't know what would make them do this, but it's likely that this would mean that they were dead anyway, so the tests above would already have shown up the flaw. -- Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
