I'm still on my Mk.III Jetta's original clutch with over 110,000 miles on the engine/tranny. I rev-match and double-clutch in her all the time (practice makes perfect). I'd say the clutch lasts a long time as it is. Your chances of thrashing your gearbox and reducing its lifespan is much higher if you don't use the clutch. There is stuff on cars that is meant to wear. Clutches are but one of the many and they are cheaper than a new tranny! Being frugal has its place but let's not get cheap!
