Now that you mention it, Russ, I have to agree with you (assuming that above
you meant to say "Use a bathroom scale to calculate the force required to
operate the pedal.")

After that, you just have to figure your mechanical advantage like you say,
including any hydraulic advantage, and you're pretty much done.

The only drawback to this is that you have to have a working system to make the
measurements on. It won't work for a new design; then you would need to work
forwards from the pressure plate to see what was necessary and design in enough
mech advantage that the average driver could manage it.

BTW, did anyone else catch the thread on RAMVA a few weeks ago when John
Connelly mentioned that VW used different length actuating arms in different
years and they compensated for this by also using different length arms on the
clutch pedal shaft? I had known about the tranny end change, but I had always
thought that the pedal clusters were all alike.

Knowing this, we can mix a late tranny case with an early pedal cluster and get
an easier acting clutch. Apparently this is a combination that VW never did,
but I accidentally did this a few years ago on one of my daily drivers. I
THOUGHT it seemed unusually nice, but I thought this was just how they ALL were
after the late tranny case was introduced. John confirms that this is a nice
combo, especially with a heavier than stock clutch. Just switching to the late
case with the long clutch arm also takes some load off the cable.
