You should check your home team first!

I've the 205T on my dual carb 1971 engine. Mine is timed at TDC. There are
timing marks shown for different engine numbers on the club website
http://www.hallvw.clara.co.uk/type3ign.htm plus the timing each uses. You may
find your 72 has a 71 engine, or even that the car is a 71 (does the chassis
start 361 for '71 or 362 for '72?). It presumably has two vacuum pick-up
points on the carb/manifold for the vacuum can.
If it's not the normal distributor for the engine, I suggest you time it as a
twin vac anyway if both parts are working. TDC is the left-hand mark, on its
own.

There's also a page of engine and chassis numbers on the website so you can see
if it's original or replacement.
