I recentley helped someone part out a fastback with popouts. Only one of them was still on the car and the frame was beaten up. To our surprise the front window sill had no provisions for hinges such as the holes in my squareback. It looked as if the front of the window was held in by the rubber seal similar to the way a stationary seal works. The chrome frame was set into the rubber like a piece of trim as opposed to the chrome frame with rubber seals and a hinge on a squareback. My take on it was that the large latch has to bend the front of the frame and rubber and support it in the popped out position. I've never seen anything like it on any other model of volkswagen or other car for that matter. Very strange. In a way the setup seemed barely sufficient to hold the windows in but Im no expert.
