The date is 1938, for the laying (legung) of the foundation stone (Grundstein). That was Thursday 26 May 1938 (Ascension Day). I've just re-found and lost again a copy of an article on those tinnies, which was in VW Trends April 1991, but I have found the text of the article by Tim Pahl (?) which explained how to tell genuine original ones from reproductions. Apparently, if it's not plastic, it's not original. The copies generally have less distinct cogs and some imperfections on the Beetle door, but the clincher is the repros/copies are metal. The first pin is for achieving 100,000 Km in a Beetle - claimed fairly often in the '50s. I don't know when they stopped. Does the second show "Volkswagenwerkes Mai 1938" ? I don't think it was called that then, wasn't it KDFWagen at first? I think we could all claim the third one! The fourth one mentions Fallersleben, the town which became swallowed up by Wolfsburg, and Town of KDF-Wagens. Incidentally, the German national anthem was written by someone who lived there. The fifth shows one of the KDF symbols, such as appeared on the savings stamp card (Sparkarte). I don't know for certain if they are originals or old copies - there was a fashion in the '60s and '70s for Third Reich memorabilia, and many copies are from that period. Dave.
