In my 40 years of working on VW's, I have rarely seen a bad steering
box. This doesn't mean that they can't go bad. If you do need a new
steering box, one from a standard T-1 (not a super beetle) is the same,
from about 1964 up. The piman arm is different, and the mounting clamp
is different.
You should be able to get one from a salvage yard pretty cheap.
