The best insulation is actually just a metal sheet that sits between the two 
parts: A heat shield. It just needs to be supported by small pieces that won't 
conduct much hear by conduction from the muffler to the shield. The challenge 
would be to support it such that the vibration doesn't break it loose.

Interesting. Is it coated both inside and out?

The "copper" nuts that I have seen are just copper plated steel and really 
aren't any better than plain steel. I've got some brass nuts which really work 
well, but pure copper would be too soft to be useful. Note that a magnet will 
attract the copper plated steel nuts, but not copper or brass nuts.

Does the exhaust then exit thru the original clearance area on the left?

Yes, I hate the aftermarket exhausts that just don't quite clear the bodywork. 
Unfortunately, all the other ones seem to have this problem.
