It is certainly true that you need to use a high enough octane that your engine does not knock. Once you've done that, extra octane does not provide extra power. The only thing that I've heard of that changes the energy content of gasoline is alcohol, and that actually lowers it. Your car should get slightly worse mi/gal with gasohol, but it will probably run cooler, and the mi/$ will probably be almost the same.
