It seems to me the 914 was the top of the Type 4 line in the same way the 34 topped the Type 3s and the 14 the Type 1s. If we accept the Type 4s were designed to replace the Type 3s, then the 914 was indeed VW's direct successor to the 34, albeit with input from Porsche (a VW tradition). And completely apart from type designations, the 914 was VW's topline product, as was the 34. I dunno how much more "real" you can get.
