The type 34 was never intended to sell in large numbers from the beginning.
Here's a quote from an original sales brochure: "Because it's a
limited-production car, it's built like a custom car."

Another reason I've heard is that since the T34 was mostly hand built,
Karmann didn't think they couldn't keep up with U.S. demand (which we all
know was extremely high by the mid-1960s)
