To me, this says that VW recognized that these hinges were a weak point and
needed to be treated somewhat carefully. The modern assumption that you can
just open a hatch like this and let it fly up on its own is likely to quickly
bend the hinges on a squareback.

I would say that the hinges today are as weak a point as they were then. However, today they can avoid damage by installing those shock absorber-type units that slow down the lid or the hood as it opens.
