It also contains a solvent that can thin the original thickened lubricant to enable it to do its job again. I used WD40 on a retractable measuring tape that wasn't retracting easily, about 6 months ago, and it is still working fine. My Type 3 electronic clock wasn't working, but WD40 got it working again, and it was still working 4 years later. It may not work as well in a very dry, hot part of the world which would remove the volatile substances more quickly, but it works for me! Dave.
